A basic study on the social factors in the diversification of Ryuukyuuan dialects.

To grasp the trend in the diversifications or changes in the Ryuukyuuan dialects dynamically, the investigation in 1996-1997 has been executed through the following points of view, focusing on Miyako archipelago where such survey has been hardly reported.1) survey on the dialect consciousness in Hirara city through the investigation by field research and mail2) survey on the dialectal variations observed in and around Hirara city by field resarchAs for 1), the investigation of images held by male native people dwelling in Hirara city against Miyako dialect, Naha dialect spoken in the city of prefectural government, and standard Japanese, was excuted in 1996 and 1997. By the comparison of this data with another data which was collected likewise in Naha city in 1994, it became evident that the interdialect generated between conventional dialect and standard in Miyako has never connsolidate such inndependent status as observed in Naha, where the interdialect have had so confirmed status that people has named the third variation as Uchinaayamatuguchi.As for 2), in parallel with the survey on dialectal consciousness, the basic research on the dialectal variations resulted from the ever-occurred diversification in Miyako arhipelago, especially in the northern dialects of Miyako mainland, Oogami, Karimata, Ikema. Sound data of these dialects was recorded by DAT with good quality, and The Sound of Oogami Dialect, wordform and grammar, with reference to Karimata Dialect (CD and its explanation) was published in 1988 as one of the reports by this research project.
