A contribution of news items to the attitude of Japanese care giver for the frail elderly.

We made two kinds of from Asahi newspaper to describe and find a contribution of news items to the recipient's concept of care for older adults living at home. The first database was made by leading articles touching upon the elderly following search for some key words from Asahi database 1950 to 1997. The other database was made by news touching upon the elderly over the whole papers on every Respect for the Aged Day (15_<thf> of September) from 1957 to 1996.Leading articles is considered that they show the opinion to policy or a social problem at that time as Asahi Company. We classified every leading articles on Respect for the Aged Day in three groups, 1 is the group judged to have direction for the titutionalization, 3 is the group judged to have direction for the home care, 2 is the group judged to have no direction. Group 1 appeared only once during these forty years. Group 3 appeared on 1970 at first, then reappeared on 1975 and often appeared after this.Also some key words were worked out and the number of news judged to involve every key word were counted. In the 1970's, feeling of anxiety suicide of aged, narrowness of residential house, relationship with a daughter-in-law, difficulty of living etc were a matter of concern on the paper. In the 1980's, frail elderly, a burden of care giver, a spouse, family role, etc were a matter of concern. In the 1990's, the place where elderly receive care and dying was a matter of concern.Letters from a reader are run every day so letters on Respect for the Aged Day were read carefully. Letters showed that in general, home care was considered as an ideal in the 1990's, which was the direction showed by Asahi paper and a national policy but for the caring family, it was told to he a hard choice. It was considered that news items had a tendency to contribute to the concept of care for older adults living at home.
