Investigation of collagen type III knockout mouse

Collagen type III is a fibrous collagen which is essential for maintaining elasticity of cardiovascular system. Liu et al. (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA94 ; 1852-1856 : 1997) have developed collagen type III knockout mouse by homologous recombination. In this project, we perform histopathological analysis of collagen type II KO mice, especially on cardiovascular system. We found that some homozygous offsprings showed subcutaneous, stomach, and pulmonary hemorrhage, and marked enlargement of the heart. However, they did not show any cardiac malformation. Further investigation is necessary to prove the consistency of these lesions.
