1930年代の日本と南アジアとの通商関係は、欧米のアジア植民地に適用された経済「ブロック」化政策などによって「崩壊」を余儀なくされたとの認識が存在する。しかし、本研究を通して得られた知見は、むしろ多様な通商の担い手を通した関係の維持であった。印僑らの通商網の敏感な反応を引き出すことによって、30年代の日本は南アジアとの通商的相互依存関係を緊密化させたのであり、外交的な選択肢を狭められるような世界的な「孤立」化の方向に立たされていたのではなかったのである。日本の外務省は「協調的経済外交」政策を基調にしており、あわせて商工省の指導する輸出統制も在日本印僑の存在を認識しながら、関係維持を模索するものであった。印度輸出組合の輸出統制は、数量統制を基本としたが、下位貿易商に輸出取引への参入機会を与える内容であり(商工省の「員数主義」)、アジア通商網の担い手である各貿易商の日本製品取引意欲を殺ぐものではなかったのである。日本の対外貿易の決定的な衰退は、41年7月の対日本資産凍結といった国際政治上における大状況の変化によるものであり、そうであるとすれば、戦争につながる日本の「孤立」化は、30年代の通商摩擦に起因するものではなかった。こうした知見を、自著『アジア国際通商秩序と近代日本』(名古屋大学出版会、2000年2月)の第5章で展開した。
