本年度は戦前期に印僑との取引関係をもった播州西脇の高瀬弘家文書の整理と分析に重点を置いた。3000点以上にわたる経営執務文書の整理にあたった.高瀬家は1932年から大不況からの脱却を展開するが,それは華矯、印橋通商網を通した輸出の拡大によるものであった。高瀬家は、32年の為替切り下げをうけて、製品の買い付けに積極化した華僑(三盛洋行-対シンガポール輸出を担う広東系華僑)と印僑(カルワー、pkナタラジャなど)によって販路を回復したのである。大不況と植民地経済のブロック化の時代と認識されてきた1930年代において、高瀬家の事例は、条件の変化に敏感に反応する華僑、印僑通商網にのって製品輸出を拡大させる、不況からの回復過程を示していた。そのほか、戦前期の神戸、大阪の華僑や印僑の経済活動のなかで注目すべきは、国民経済の産業の高度化に果たした彼等の通商網の役割であった。大阪の日本人綿布売込商の亀山敏太は、第一次大戦「の勃発によって欧州から荷物が入って来なくなったといふようなことから、ボツポツ支那人が日本に来て(中略)こんなものは出来ぬか」 (日本綿糸布輸出組合連合会企画部「輸出綿業界の回顧」1941年3月、60-2頁)と加工綿製品の見本を持って来たのが、日本綿業の加工品生産への進出の契機であったと語っている。また日本人人絹製品輸出商が1939年にボンベイを訪問し、人絹工業の展開を視察した時に見い出したのは、在ボンベイ人絹工場が「長年日本製絹織物或は綿製品の取引に従事し、日本(神戸又は横浜)に店舗を持ち、日本に往来した経験のあるインド商人によって(中略)建設され」 (網本行利遍「英領印度の旅を終えて」1939年12月、329頁)ていた状況であった。1937年以降の戦時統制が日本において展開するなかで、印僑は日本製品の取引から製品の輸入代替化を指向したのであった。本年度の研究では、戦時への突入や大不況の到来という、制度的な動揺にたいして、華僑や印僑などの、国家の後援を持たない、換言すれば非制度的な主体が敏感に反応することで、秩序の再編に強く貢献したことを示していた.華僑、印僑通商網の歴史的意義は、制度の動揺という外的な刺激にたいしてし、アジア国際通商秩序の再編を促す非制度的な経済主体の対応能力の育成にあった。
