本研究の目的は、部分モデルを利用する可能世界意味論のひとつとしての状況理論・状況意味論の方法を利用して、テキストベースからの知識発見がどのような理論によって可能になるかを明らかにすることである。本年度は、これらの研究に加えて、哲学的、論理学的観点から以下のような成果を得た。1.発見科学においては、大量データのなかにある規則性の発見のアルゴリズムの開発がひとつの研究目的とされるが、そのようなアルゴリズムによって、従来は統合不可能であった特定個人に関する情報でかならずしも本人がそのまま他人に知られたくないような内容のものを発見することが可能になる。これは、発見科学という学術研究の成果が社会的、倫理的な影響をもつことを意味する。具体的には、たとえば、顧客購買選好を追及することが可能になること、特定個人について通常であれば結びつけることができない経済的情報を結びつけることができるようになるということから、プライバシーが侵害されるというような状況がでてくることが予想される。このような可能性をもつ研究であることを自覚し、その社会的責任の所在を表明することが重要であることを指摘した。この内容の研究の一部は日本学術振興会未来開拓事業「情報倫理の構築」プロジェクトと協力して行なわれた。2.「発見」について、「意味がある発見」とされる発見と「意味がない」とされる発見があることに着目して、その差異の基準を検討した。その結果、発見に意味があるか否かは、発見がおこなわれる社会的コンテクストによって決定されることが多いことを明らかにした。
