THE GENERATING PROCESS OF THE IMAGE OF GEIJYUTSUKA IN JAPAN : HOW HAVE THE ARTISTS BEEN NARRATED?

This research aims to pursue the historical process in which the image of "geijyutsu-ka" peculiar to the age of modern in Japan was generated, by analyzing a variety of discourses referring to artists and their works. To achieve this purpose I followed the procedure undermentioned.First, I thoroughly examined an extensive amount of literature from ancient to early modern period in order to collect episodes of artists, who specialized in painting.Second, I summarized the plots of every episode and then reduced them to some kinds of "topos, " that is, the typical narratives or stereotyped expressions for the artists and their works.Third, I classified the topos according to artists, who were categorized into eight kinds of artists, that is, edokoro-eshi, e-busshi, gaso, goyo-eshi, machi-eshi, bunjin-gaka, and ukiyo-eshi.Forth, I analyzed what kinds of topos are selected, how they are combined, and how they are narrated imaginatively every category of artist.Fifth, I clarified that the image of bunjin-gaka and that of geijyutsuka have a continuous and discontinuous relationship in terms of the topos of "expression of personality/inner life" as well as "truckling to the times".
