1. Object : To understand changes in physical conditions, dietary habit and lifestyle of junior high school students during the last decade.2. Subjects and Methods : From 1991 through 2000, the physical measurement, the blood test and the questionnaire survey were conducted with all the students in a junior high school in U City of Kyoto prefecture. We annalyzed annual comparisons and changes during the past decade of the anthropometric and blood characteristics, the response rates, the five indexes of diet evaluations, and the scores to understand their pyhical symptoms according to years and sex.3. Results and Conclusions(1)The number of respondents was 6477 subjects, 3283 boys and 3194 girls (response rate : 90.9%). (2)The obesity index significantly increased among the boys and girls in the third year. (3)There is no significant increase or decrease seen in the serum total cholesterol, except for the girls in the second year (showing an increasing tendency) and the boys in the thir … More d year (showing a decreasing tendency). An increasing tendency in HDL-C is confirmed in all the girls and boys in all three years, while a decreasing tendency is seen in the number of students with arteriosclerosis. (4)Among 18 items regarding the category of food frequency, there is no significant increase or decrease seen in the items except fruit (except the boys in the first year), dairy products(except the girls in the first year), meat (girls in the second year) and food cooked with oil (girls in the first year). Among 12 items regarding dietary habit, some increases and decreases are seen in the 6 items such as an increase in the number of students who bring lunch every day (all the boy students). (5)8 items of the 14 items regarding the lifestyle show some decrease or increase tendencies such as a decrease in the number of students who go to cram school more than three or four times a week (boys in the first year). After changes in dietary life, lifestyle and physical condotions of junior high school students during the past decade were compared and studied, the results indicate that there are not a lot of items showing decrease or increase tendencies.
