Gelöste Volatile in silikatischen Schmelzen beeinflussen Entgasungsprozesse aufsteigender Magmen bei vulkanischen Eruptionen. Bis jetzt wurden überwiegend Löslichkeiten von den reinen Fluiden H20, CO2, S in silikatischen Schmelzen untersucht. In der Natur sind aber komplexe gemischte Fluide vorhanden. Ziel unseres Projektes ist es, die Löslichkeit von komplexen Fluiden in Schmelzen zu untersuchen und deren Auswirkung auf die Phasenbeziehungen und die Entgasung während des Aufstiegs der Magmen am Beispiel des Unzen-Vulkans (Japan, ICDP-Bohrungsziel) experimentell nachzuvollziehen. In einem ersten Projekt (1998 - 2000) wurden Ergebnisse für die Löslichkeiten von gemischten Fluiden C02-H20 in Schmelzen des Unzens Vulkans gewonnen. Schwefel und Chlor sind jedoch in beträchtlichen Konzentrationen in den Schmelzen des Unzens zu finden. In dem neuen Projekt soll die Löslichkeit von Schwefel und Chlor in Unzen-Schmelzen (Andesit bis Rhyolit), die mit C-H-O-S bzw. C-H-O-Cl-Fluiden koexistieren untersucht werden. Ergänzend hierzu wird in Zusammenarbeit mit H. Sato (Kobe) auch die Verteilung von Chlor zwischen Amphibol und Schmelze analysiert. Die Ergebnisse sind von Bedeutung um: (1) Die präeruptiven Bedingungen zu bestimmen, (2) die Kristallisationsbedingungen in der Grundmasse (P, T, Volatilgehalt der Restschmelze) festzulegen, (3) die Aufstiegsgeschwindigkeit des Magmas abzuschätzen, (4) die Entwicklung der freigesetzten Volatile und der Viskosität der Restschmelzen während des Aufstiegs zu modellieren.
