A Study of Investment in Japan by the British Armament and Steel Industries before the Second World War

For the last three years, we have been inspecting historical documents mainly at Vickers Archives, Cambridge and Japan Steel Works, Muroran. Besides references attached below, not few research results are in preparation as follows :Abe's writing 'the Business Strategy and Corporate Finance of Vickers Ltd. between the Wars'. Onozuka's articles, 'Technological Influence from Britain to Japanese Armament Industry in 1910s: Significance of Kongo II and her sisters built in Japan' and 'Coalescence and Competition among Arms Manufacturers: Armstrongs and Vickers in the early twentieth century' and Chida's articles, 'The Naval Construction Programme and the Establishment of Chinjuhu, from 1870s to 1890s', and 'The Construction and Inaugration of Kurechinjuhu', will be completed in the near future. Yokoi's paper,' Arms Exports to Japan by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. during the British Rearmament in 1930s' is also in course of preparation. Nagura, Onozuka and Yokoi will read joint-paper for the 71^<st> National Conference of the Socio-Economic History Society, Wakayama Univ.,19^<th> May, 2002. In addition to them, Trebilcock has already presented discussion paper, 'The British Armaments Industry, the British State, Technology Transfer and the Japanese Market 1850-1929'.
