项目摘要

本年度の研究は、16世紀のアジア海域世界における琉球の位置付けを行なうに際し、琉球王国の海上交易勢力としての発展という事象を、単に琉球諸島ないしは東シナ海海域のみならず、広くアジア規模でどのように捉えうるかという問題の検討を主眼に据え、明朝との関係を中心に考察を行なった。琉球が明朝の登場を一つの契機として海上交易勢力としての発展を実現し、14世紀末から16世紀にかけてアジア海域世界の中で非常に重要な役割を果たしたことは、前年度までの研究から既に明らかとなっている。しかし、これを琉球に固有の事象としてではなく、広くアジア規模で見られる新興国家の出現と共通する事象として評価する視点が、従来の研究動向には欠けていたように思われる。そこで、本年度の作業においては琉球と比較しうる同時期の新興国家として、東南アジア・マラッカ海峡域に出現したマラッカおよび中央アジアの交易中継地に出現したハミの両王国を取り上げ、初歩的な比較考察を試みた。これら3つの王国には、(1)明朝成立後に登場した新興国家であること、(2)いずれも交易上の要衝に位置し、交易ルートの結節点として重要な役割を担っていたこと、(3)明朝の強力なバックアップを得て急速に発展したこと、(4)いずれも明朝に対して頻繁に朝貢使節を派遣し、明朝の朝貢秩序の中で重要な役割を果たしていたこと、などの共通点が見いだせる。それぞれの行く末は異なるものの、このような作業が琉球王国の歴史的展開を理解する上で極めて有益なことは間違いなく、15世紀末から16世紀にかけてのアジア海域世界の動向および琉球の衰退を考える上でも有用な視点であることが確認できた。
