项目摘要

本年度は、採用最終年度に当たることから、研究課題のまとめとなる論文を執筆し発表した。これによって、共和主義やジェームス・ハリントン研究に画期をもたらしたJ. G. A.ポーコックが、16世紀フィレンツェから18世紀スコットランドにおける経済学の形成までの期間をひとつの視角によって分析したうえで議論をおこなった理由とその目的、そしてどのような学術的貢献をなしたのかが明らかにされた。それによれば、ポーコックが行ったことは、古典古代の共和国における市民のあり方とその自律性を規範型としながらも、16世紀のイタリア、17世紀のイングランド、そして18世紀のスコットランドにおける思想家たちが、自律の理念を、自覚的、あるいは無自覚的に、自らの時代の課題に応じた自律として理解してきたことを、概念の解釈史として描き出すことであった。つまり、自律の理念に関する解釈の歴史の一こまとして、商業活動が人間の社会認識に多大な影響を及ぼしつつあった18世紀スコットランド的な解釈として、自律の具体的内容が経済的な自律として理解されたとポーコックは主張するのである。概念の時代横断的な生命力と、その解釈結果の多様性とを統一的に把握・解釈しようとしたことに、ポーコックの独創性が示されている。またこの論文によって、ポーコックが残した課題をも明確に把握することができたので、アダム・スミスなどのスコットランド啓蒙思想や、そこでの経済学の形成における共和主義的要素をどのように扱うべきなのかということに関する議論のポイントをいくつか指摘した。このことによって、本研究課題の目的である共和主義と経済学の形成の相関関係を明らかにするための、ひとつのベンチ・マークが確定されたように思われる。
