明治初期の音楽行政官、教育家の伊澤修二の音楽思想形成について、とくに留学中のアメリカにおける音楽・教育思想との関連から調査をおこなった。従来、芸術・文化政策の一環として論じられるが、当時のアメリカにおける教育思想からみても、初等教育における声の訓練、ヴォーカル・トレーニングは、音声言語学的な観点から関心によるものであり、芸術文化的なものではない。むしろ明治初期に求められていた標準語創出・地方における方言矯正という政策に密接に結びついている(以上は、近代音楽研究会、日本音楽学会東洋音楽学会合同例会等で発表)。また音楽には新しい時間的秩序の創出も求められていた。幕末鼓笛楽は身体の規律や儀式のための音楽を担当したが、伊澤修二が鼓手であったことは偶然ではない。日本各地に民俗芸能として幕末の鼓笛楽を伝承している鼓笛隊の調査(フイールドワーク)は10団体をかぞえ(札幌市・山形県上山市・千葉県佐原市・京都市等)、聞き取りや演奏の分析、また古文書や楽譜史料などの調査を並行しておこない、幕末期の鼓笛楽の実態を解明しつつある(演奏をVTRに撮影保存調査は今後も継続)。以上のような西洋音楽による標準語や時間秩序の創出は、明治期日本における音楽の重要な一系譜であった。しかしながら、そのような近代化はあらかた達成され、さらに明治期後期以降の芸術音楽の台頭によって、そのような音楽概念は近代日本の音楽史のなかで死角となってしまっていることを、論文にまとめつつある。
