幕末維新期に流入した西洋音楽(軍楽)が、土着化して地域の祭礼など用いられる現象の例として、山形県上山市に伝承されている鼓笛隊、上山藩鼓笛楽保存会の調査を行った。幕末の上山藩では西洋式軍隊を整備する際、軍事教練のために鼓笛隊も組織したが、廃藩置県によって消滅した。しかし、明治11年以来、旧藩主松平氏を祀る神社で祭礼の神輿渡御列で鼓笛隊が先導をつとめている(約140年間継続)。楽器編成は篠笛と西洋ドラム(大・小太鼓)の和洋折衷式で、お囃子に似た旋律のため、表面的には西洋音楽には見えないが、リズムパターンやドラム奏法にその名残がみられる(ただし現在ではそれが西洋起源であることは意識されず、自分たちの音楽と認識されている)。五線譜ではなく独自に考案した記譜を補助手段とした口伝のレッスンも興味深い。全国各地に残る同種の幕末鼓笛隊と比較すると、当時のスタイルを保持する団体と、完全に変容した団体の中間に位置するだろう。保存会の協力のもと撮影された映像は、単に研究に用いられるだけでなく、模範演奏の貴重な記録(ex.現存する技能継承者のフィンガリングやブレス、動作の記録、その発言など)として、保存会にフィードバックされ活用されている。西洋音楽の要素をふくみつつ変容を遂げた民俗芸能は、従来の「純粋な日本の文化」を志向の文化行政からは無視されてきた感があるが、逆にダイナミックな文化変容の事例としての幕末鼓笛隊が、現存する(時間が静止したかのような)伝統芸能を再検討するための視座を提供するだろう。

In the late reform period, Western music (military music) was introduced, and indigenous music was used for religious ceremonies in the region. Examples of such phenomena were investigated.
