研究成果は2つの論文公刊という形で結実した。まず、2002年10月に『創文』(創文社)から、「境界線を越える民主主義」と題した論文を公刊した。本論では、日本では本格的に紹介されていないJohn S. Dryzckの熟議民主主義論を紹介した。グローバル化の進展する現代社会においては、国民国家を閉鎖系として思考する理論的枠組は妥当性を欠きつつある。国民国家の枠内で考えられてきたデモクラシー論もまた、その意味で限界を抱えている。その点でDryzckの熟議民主主義論は、公共圏における熟議の観点から民主主義を再構成する議論であり、必ずしも国民国家の枠にとらわれないポテンシャルを持つという点を明らかにした。さらに熟議民主主義論をEU研究の文脈に位置づけることにより、実証研究と理論研究の総合の一方向性を提示した。EU研究では、一方のガバナンス論を中心とする実証研究が、他方ではデモクラシー論を中心とする理論研究がなされているが、両者を架橋する研究は極めて少い。このような現状を鑑みつつ、より具体性を持った理論研究を可能とするための試論を展開できた。次に2003年2月には、『思想』(岩波書店)から、「後期近代における政治の変容」と題した論考を公刊した。本論では、近代の政治の前提条件である国際/国内及び公/私を分離する境界線が揺らいでおり、政治のアリーナが拡大・洋化している事を明らかにした。また現代社会において深刻な課題となっている、identityの政治に如何に対処可能なのか、近年脚光を浴びているラディカル・デモクラシー論の観点から理論構築を行った。国内を射程とした政治理論と、国際政治学の架橋に成功したと考えている。発行部数も手伝い、本論文は現時点でも、政治学のみならず社会学や法哲学、憲法の研究者から多くの反響を得、研究会での報告を依頼されるなど、デモクラシー論をめぐる論争に一石を投じたものと自負している。
