项目摘要

昨年に引き続き、歴史用語の翻訳基準の研究・設定、及びそれらの電子情報化が、当該年度における中心的な研究活動であった。1.前近代日本史用語・歴史語彙の翻訳基準の研究中世史だけではなく、近世史の歴史用語も対照とし、参照する既存研究書を増やし、項目・インデックス数の拡充に努めた。結果として、グロッサリーには現在までに英文32冊分、約20,000の項目が入力された。これらについて、翻訳・ローマ字化などの基準を定め、それに沿って修正を行っている。また、これまでに入力したグロッサリー/インデックスの著者・出版社宛に利用許可願いを出し、許可が降りたものから順に一般公開していく準備を始めた。2.日本前近代史料の国際情報化の研究(1)毎年行われる国際研究集会において、グロッサリー・ワークショップを開き、参加した欧米の研究者各人がより主体的にプロジェクトに関わるところとなった。(2)昨年の4月にワシントンD.C.で開かれた全米アジア研究学会でのプロジェクトについての報告文を作成した。今年も3月末にニューヨークで開かれるCouncil of East Asian Librariesの集会に参加し、プロジェクトの報告を行う。また学会発表の他にも、欧米の諸研究機関の日本研究者と意見交換して、世界各国で進行中の類似プロジェクトの進行状況や、それに纏わるさまざまな問題点、あるいは我々のプロジェクトに対する具体的なニーズを確認できた。(3)グロッサリーのデータベースが実際にどのような形で史料編纂所のデータベースの国際的な有効利用に貢献できるものにするかを検討してきた。その結果、「日本史用語応答型翻訳支援システム」を開発し、現在公開に向けて準備中である。今後の日本研究の国際化に大いに役立つものであることと確信する。副研究として挙げた中世後期のキリシタン書の翻訳・理解については、引き続き日本仏教の<悪>や<魔>の概念との比較研究を中心に史料の収集に従事し、研究会での口頭発表や論文執筆も行った。
