本研究の目的は、調査地域である、東南アジア大陸部、即ち、タイ、ラオス、カンボジア、ベトナムの四ヶ国で、危機に瀕した少数民族の言語を調査するに当たり、有用な言語調査票を作成することであった。研究代表者及び分担者は、定期的な研究会を開き、言語調査票作成のための基礎資料を選定した。研究会では、調査票の作成・公開方法についても協議し、またタイ、ラオス、カンボジア、ベトナムの四言語の基礎語彙、特に移動を表す動詞に関して、従来指摘されることのなかった意味的な差異の重要性についても検討した。語彙調査票は、日本語、英語に加え、調査地域の国語・公用語であるタイ、ラオス、カンボジア、ベトナムの四言語を、各固有の文字表記及び音韻表記を加えて作成し、インフォーマントの協力を得て妥当性を検討した。作成過程では、日本語、英語の語彙がカバーする意味領域の差異から、媒介言語によってインフォーマントが提供し得る情報にかなりの差が現れた。今後、言語調査を行うに当たっては、文化的・地理的にも共通事項がより多いタイ、ラオス、カンボジア、ベトナムの四言語を媒介にすることが適切であることが再確認された。また、データベース化するに当たって、既存のデータベースソフトを用いて試作版を作成したが、その過程で、文字コードの不統一と、データベース上で試用に耐えるフォント、入力システムが存在しない等の理由から、各固有の文字での表記には障害があった。作成した調査票は、東京外国語大学外国語学部のホームページを通して広く公開する予定である。更に、現地の大学、研究機関として、タイのカセサート大学、ラオスのラオス国立大学、文化研究所、カンボジアのプノンペン大学、王立学士院、ベトナムのハノイ国家大学、言語学院、民族学院との連絡調整を行い、作成中の語彙調査票の妥当性と、今後の調査の可能性について協議した。
