In 2000- 2001, We have researched on characteristics and historical changes concerning Japanese attitude to facing death, from a point of view of Japanese literature, Buddhism, Christianity etc.The way of this research is as follows : reseach on literature ; literatures especially on faith of Japanese gods(kami) and Buddha, narrative literature, Buddhist arta field survey ; Miyagi, Fukushima, Togakushi, Kyoto, Ise, Nara, Wakayama, Osaka, Kobe, Akashi, Shikoku, Tsuwano, Fukuoka, Oita, Saga etc.comparative studies ; Buddhism of India and Tibet, Hinduism, and Japanese Buddhism the Ideas of terminal care and grief care, and Japanese literature.As a result of this research, investigators have written articles, and these articles are published in a research report. As to the result, we have found out characters and historical changes concerning Japanese attitudes to facing death in various period and thought in Japan. However, we could not do comparative study of these characteristics and changes sufficiently in a limited period. And we need to research on funeral rites and ceremonies in Japan.
