The aim of this study was to investigate the meaning of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake and explore its intellectual bearings. The text is based mainly on English but consists of over sixty languages. It also depends on a dream work including enormous systems of knowledge. It is an interesting book, bur it is not clear what the book is. For that reason I first tried to explain the contents of the book in as plain Japanese as possible, adding to the commentaries in the form of annotations. Second, I analyzed the role of characters, its structural principle, how the meaning of the text is produced, the meanings of dream work, the significance of numerous episodes in the text, the importance of puns, and the relationship between narration and nation. I cannot boast that I have understood every meaning of the book, but I could elucidate its main themes. In addition, I could find the connection between the book and Ireland, though the book has been thus far read only from the continental points of view. I hope this study will stimulate the further search for the book both in Japan and abroad.

本研究的目的是考察詹姆斯·乔伊斯的《芬尼根守灵记》的意义，并探索其思想内涵。课文主要以英语为基础，但由60多种语言组成。它还依赖于一个梦想的工作，包括巨大的知识系统。这是一本有趣的书，但不清楚是什么书。出于这个原因，我首先试图用尽可能简单的日语解释这本书的内容，并以注释的形式添加到注释中。其次，分析了人物的角色，其结构原则，文本的意义是如何产生的，梦幻作品的意义，文本中大量情节的意义，双关语的重要性，以及叙事与民族的关系。我不能夸口说我理解了这本书的每一个意思，但我可以阐明它的主题。此外，我可以找到这本书与爱尔兰之间的联系，尽管到目前为止，这本书只从欧洲大陆的角度阅读。希望本文的研究能促进国内外对这本书的进一步研究。
