アジア、特に日本と中国で作られた画像が象徴する意味の理解を支援する、画像の意味解析システムを構築することを目的とし、本研究をおこなった。日本および中国において、仏教などの宗教美術における画像とその意味に関する情報を収集し、設計した情報検索システムに蓄積した。日本に関する情報は論文資料を中心に、中国に関する情報は論文資料および現地調査により収集を行なった。中国語で書かれた資料については、日本語に翻訳を行ないシステムに搭載した。宗教美術における画像とその意味は、宗教の教義、説話、経典、時代、その土地の民間信仰や社会制度等の様々な要因によって成立している。これらの象徴的意味を理解するためには、画像とその意味だけではなく、社会文化史的情報も必要となる。本研究では、画像とその意味、さらに社会文化史的情報を集約的に蓄積することにより、画像の意味解析だけではなく、日本および中国の比較、さらに画像文化の流れの研究にも利用できるようにするため、本システムに搭載するデータ項目を決定した。また情報源を明記することにより、出典の確認ができるようにした。本研究では、固有の意味を有する画像を、画像全体で把握するのではなく、画像の構成成分である要素に分解し、要素の種類と数さらには位置関係を定義し、これらの要素データに基づいて画像を把握できるシステムに改良を行なった。この改良により、画像の中の、固有の意味を有する部分のみを抽出して、意味解析に対応できるようになった。本システムに搭載するために中国において現地調査を行なったが、文化大革命の影響を受けて破壊された宗教資料が多く、画像資料の収集は困難であった。これらの資料を収集するためには、中国の研究者の協力が不可欠であることが判明した。今後、中国の研究者に協力を求めて情報の収集に努めたい。またXMLを用いることにより、Web上での公開についても検討したい。
