本研究の目的は、スコットランド啓蒙の代表的思想家D・ヒュームの文明社会論を、情念と制度の相互連関という観点から考察することにあった。とりわけ本年度は、ヒュームの歴史認識の問題にとりくみつつ、それを通して制度の形成と情念の相互連関についてのヒュームの理解を解明することに重点を置いた。ヒュームは哲学的認識としては一般的原因や多数の人々によって引き起こされる変化を重視したが、現実の歴史における偶然や個々人の影響力の問題を無視したわけではない。このことは、ヒューム最晩年の書である『イングランド史』などにおいて端的に展開されている。この問題点を、昨年度来考察してきた哲学的認識と対比・関連づけすることによって描き出すことを意図するものであった。平成14年度は、雑誌論文などに発表した研究成果はないが、積極的に学会・研究会において報告を重ねてきた。その成果は(1)「ヒュームの理想共和国論と共和主義のリアリティ」(政治思想学会、第9回研究会、自由論題、2002年5月26日、熊本大学)、(2)"Ambiguities of Hume's Views of Luxury"(The 29th Hume Conference、2002年8月7日、Finland, Helsinki)、(3)「ヒュームの文明盛衰観」(ヒュームとスミスの会、研究例会、2003年3月27日、東京)における研究報告であった。(1)は、従来ヒューム思想における位置づけが難しく、多様な解釈を生んできた「完全な共和国に関する一案」と題する論説をめぐり、ヒュームの共和制に対する理解と現実の挙和国への慎重な態度の両面からこの論説の孕む問題性を検討したものである(『政治思想研究』第3号[2003年]に報告要旨が掲載されている)。また(2)は、すでに国内で発表した研究成果「ヒュームにおける「奢侈」と文明社会」『経済学史学会年報』第38号(132〜143頁)[2000年]に、とりわけ『イングランド史』からの引用を多く加え、歴史的個別性という観点からさらなる改訂を加え、国際ヒューム学会の年次大会で発表したものである。有益な質疑応答により、国内での報告時とは異なる観点から多くの示唆を得ることが出来た。(3)は、ヒュームの文明の衰退という問題に焦点を当てたもので、文明が発展するだけでなく、盛衰をくり返すという認識を持っていた点を明らかにした。この点はヒュームの経済思想を主として商業社会に肯定的なものという観点からのみ捉えてきた従来の解釈の中でもっとも見落とされてきた研究上の死角であった。これらの報告をもって「D・ヒュームにおける情念論と制度論の構造的連関の研究」という研究課題によって求められる研究実績を果たすことができたと考えている。

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the theory of civilized society and the system of emotion. The main points of the report are disclosed in the "Study of Political Thought" No. 3 [2003].
