项目摘要

本研究の目的は、英国国教会の立場から商業社会の急速な展開に最もよく対応した教説を展開したジョゼフ・バトラー主教(1692-1752)を起点に、そのケイムズ、ヒューム、スミスらの18世紀スコットランド啓蒙や、世紀転換期から19世紀前半英国のペイリー、ベンサムらの神学的、世俗的功利主義への影響関係を、彼らの自然神学的見地と経済社会観との連関に注目しつつ解明することにあった。平成17年度の計画は、英国自然神学の知的状況をバトラーを中心に跡づけるとともに、彼によって商業社会の急速な展開を背景とした「自己利益」を肯定する人間類型把握(「経済人」)が、営利活動を必ずしも正当化しない国教会主流派の教説とどのように調停されることになったのかを、明らかにすることであった。18年度の計画は、主として、バトラーらの教説がどのようにスミスらのスコットランド啓蒙の思想家達の商業社会観に批判的に摂取され影響を与えたかを中心に、経済思想のイングランド、スコットランドの相互関係を明らかにすることであった。19年度は、平成11-13年度「萌芽的研究」によって明らかとなっているペイリーの自然神学的経済像やベンサム、J.S.ミルの宗教批判と彼らの経済社会把握と、バトラー以降の国教会主流派の経済社会観との関連、異同を明らかにするとともに、3年間の研究の総括を目指した。これらのうち、J.S.ミル宗教論に関わる部分は2006年第9回国際功利主義学会ロンドン大会、2008年第10回国際功利主義学会カリフォルニア大会で順次発表し、バトラー研究の主要部分は、学内紀要にその一部を発表予定であるとともに、「バトラー主教とヒューム、スミス」(仮題)を2009年「道徳感情論250年記念国際学会」(オクスフォード)に報告申請中である。以上は、『自然神学と社会科学』(仮題)出版という総括的な成果発表に繋がることになる。
