Religious Thought in Seventeenth-Century English Literature

My research on the relation between seventeenth-century literature and religious thought has contributed to English Literary studies in three areas.No.1: I made two noteworthy discoveries in the field of Andrew Marvell studies by examining his poem ‘Bermudas' in the light of the religio-political circumstances in which it was composed. In particular, I pointed out that the image of ‘the Orange' in the poem provides a key to understanding Marvell's religious position when the reader notices the change in its significance from an anti-Catholic to an English Royalist and pro-Catholic one. Also, by quoting a newly discovered text, I demonstrated that in the summer of 1653, the foreign policy of the Cromwellian Commonwealth was in the process of shifting to an anti-Spanish/anti-Catholic position.No.2: I have found an important connection between traducianism and the political use of traducianist images in the poetry of Robert Herrick. By finding a relevant reference to this unorthodox religious doctrine in Richard Overton's pamphlet, I argued that it had a crucial anti-Calvinistic significance in the middle of the seventeenth century.No.3: I have made the first translation of Henry Vaughan's Silex Scintillans into Japanese, together with detailed annotations on religion and politics.
