本年度は,19世紀末から20世紀初頭のアメリカと日本における絹織物業の生産組織を解明するために,資料調査と分析を進めた.その成果として,日本の絹織物業の生産組織における効率性について,従来の研究とは異なる新たな成果を得ることができた.従来の研究における想定とは異なり,1890年代から1900年代にかけての桐生の織元にとって技術進歩の要点は織布工程ではなく,染色,意匠,組織などの革新によるデザインの多様化にあった.織元は新たなデザインの先染織物を柔軟かつ迅速に市場に投入することによって利益をあげようとしたのである.そこで求められる効率的な生産組織は大規模な工場制ではなかったが,不熟練の賃機を短期間組織する問屋制も不適当であった.複雑な意匠の織物の生産には高度な製織技術が必要だったからである.問屋制の実態もまた,従来の想定とは異なっていた.有力な織元は熟達した複数の機業家と10〜30年に及ぶ賃業取引を継続しており,それらの基幹的な賃機はしばしば専業であった.こうした長期的な取引においては,しばしば言及されてきた,怠業や原料横領などの賃機の「不正」は問題とはならなかった.「不正」を訴えていたのは,こうした問屋制を組織することのできなかった不良な織元経営であったと推測される.さらに問屋制の利益とは,従来指摘されてきたような,事業規模を伸縮する自由度や副業賃機の低賃金労働などではなく,熟達した機業家をはじめ,桐生に集積している多様な賃業者との取引関係を構築することによって達成される「柔軟な専門化」こそがその核心であったと思われる.産業集積の利益を最も効率的に引き出す生産組織が問屋制であり,これに,近代的な意匠,染色,組織の技術が組み合わされ,多様な織物が生産された.それが,出現しつつあった豊かな大衆の需要を獲得したと考えられる.このように,1900年代の桐生絹織物業に見られた,都市大衆消費需要を標的とした生産の拡大は,問屋制を中心とする柔軟な生産組織による多品種少量生産によって可能となったと考えられる.
