As the results of the study conducted from FY 2001 through to FY 2003, the following results were obtained.(1)Future Prospective of Environmentally Sound Cover SoilDefinition and application possibility of environmentally sound cover soil were discussed.(2)Composting of Food Waste Using Environmentally Sound Cover Soil in Fukuoka CityPilot-scale composting experiments were conducted in a finished landfill site in Fukuoka City. The results shows that environmentally sound cover soil provides compost of satisfactory quality. This technology turned to be a promising one to contribute to the forthcoming "Society of Resource Recycling".(3)Flower-planting experiment on Environmentally Sound Cover Soil in Achi VillageFlower seeds were spreaded on environmentally sound cover soil and germination and blooming were observed. The cover soil proved to be good enough for flowers to grow. The result of this research is expected to improve citizens' acceptance to solid waste disposal sites which they have regarded as nuisant ones.(4)Compost Producing Landfill in Tanh Hoa City, VietnamA full-scale composting plant was constructed under the supervision of the research team. It began operation to produce compost using landfill-type fermentation bed. This study has proved that this method will help developing countries in terms of environmental management and material recycling as well.
