(1)The damage of Ashiyahama Residential building due to Kobe Earthquake is studied and the following results is obtained :i)The axial breakage of heavy column at the first storey is occurred by the large axial and bending moment. Since the location of plastic hinges is closely related to actual failure, it is necessary to avoid concentration in the distribution of plastic hinges.ii)Earthquake wave being near source brings significant damage to structure by the rapid variation of energy. The failure at welding point occurs from the rapid variation of energy.iii)The fracture propagating through column and brace of Ashiyahama Residential building is occurred by concentrated stress produced by connecting the brace to column without gusset plate.(2) The simplified analysis used the extended rod theory developed here is clarified to express well the dynamic behavior of mega structure such as Ashiyahama Residential building. The dynamic interaction problem between structure and soil states in … More creases the damage due to earthquake. The amplification of earthquake wave acting on engineering foundation is approximately the same as the effect used Gs given by a bulletin.(3)The phenomenon of bulge buckling at the mid-height of steel bridge piers due to the Kobe Earthquake discussed from the numerical computation. The bulge buckling is closely related to rapid variation in the total strain energy of an element due to step-wise variable thickness. The buckling strength determined from the numerical computation is 1.06 times the theoretical strength for elastic-plastic buckling and 0.18 times for elastic buckling. Similar bulge buckling also occurs in a uniform cylindrical shell subjected to the same earthquake wave, but near the base instead of the mid-height.. The simplified theory governing the phenomenon of bulge buckling at the mid-height is presented from the extended rod theory.(4)The upthrow of boulders frequently observed near the source area of a shallow strong earthquake is examined by considering waves, which emanate deep in the ground, propagate through the ground and boulder, and reflect back to the ground, causing interaction between the ground and the boulder. The upthrow of the boulder takes place due to resonance in the response of the system of the ground and boulder to the external wave input. Thus, the magnitude of earthquake may be estimate from the upthrow of the boulder. Less
