本研究は、フィリピンの儀礼親族制度について,都市貧困層地区とそこの代表的な出身母村を対象として,経済発展過程における役割とその変容を分析しようとするものである。2度の実態調査を通じて,フィリピンのコンパドラスゴと呼ばれる社会階層間を横断する儀礼親族制度が,どのような形で水平的社会関係としてのコミュニティを補完ないしは代替し,経済発展にどのような役割を果たしているかを理解する新しい視角を得ることができた。ここで,フィリピンにおける調査は次のような手続きで実施した。平成13年9月5日から30日の本調査では,中西が主としてマニラ首郡圏のマラボン町,丸山が主として西ビサヤ地方のアクラン州にて,集中的に世帯別調査を行い,アテネオ・デ・マニラ大学において調査速報を報告した。平成13年12月26日から平成14年1月3日の補足調査では,同大学にて中西が中間報告を行ったあと,短期の補足調査を実施した。この調査は,次年度以降に予定している海外学術調査のための捕足と予備的情報を得ることを目的であった。この研究によって得ることができた成果の概要は次の通りである。すなわち,フィリピン経済は1980年代の経済危機のあと,90年代以降,復興を遂げてきた。現在では,農村,都市双方で貧困緩和が実現しつつあるが,貧困層は固有な慣習である儀礼親族制度を巧みに利用し,経済変動のショックを圓避していることが観察されることが明らかになった。さらに,従来,こうした二者間社会経済関係はコミュニティ阻害的要因と考えられてきたが,むしろ経済復興過程で,水平的関係の深化を促し,コミュニティ形成に稜極的な役割をもたらしうることを発見することができた。たしかに,農村では農地改革の進展に依存し,都市では都市労働市場の状況によっては垂直的関係への可逆性を有するものの,こうした傾向が観察されたことは,今後のコミュニティ研究に新しい視角を提示しうると考えられる。
