戦中漫画に反映された日本の国家・文化的アイデンティティと帝国主義的イデオロギーの探求。太平洋戦争期の漫画が日本の帝国主義、植民地主義、そして戦時生活をどのように表現し、読者に納得させる役割を果たしたかを検討。当時の漫画家たちによって産み出された視覚・言語テクストを詳細に読み解く作業。これらによって戦中漫画の全体像を浮き彫りにする目的で2002年9月より2003年8月までの12か月間、次のような調査および研究を実施した。9月〜12月:川崎市市民ミュージアム、日本漫画資料館、国立国会図書館、坪内記念演劇博物館、日本近代フィルムセンターなどを調査し、現代漫画の歴史的発展を調査するための一次資料(江戸期、明治期以降の主要な浮世絵・錦絵・漫画雑誌・漫画本など)の分析。戦時大衆雑誌に掲載されたコマ漫画の資料収集・分析。伝単・漫画絵葉書・紙芝居などの資料・分析。1月〜3月:プロパガンダ、メディア検閲統制に関する軍部・政府関係文書の調査分析。戦時漫画の役割についての言説を検証。戦中の新聞・大衆雑誌に発表された、漫画家や文化人たちによって書かれた漫画論を分析。高知市立横山隆一記念漫画館に出張し、館保存資料の調査・分析。以上をもとに執筆活動を始めた。『季刊諷刺画研究』43・44号に「戦争と漫画に関する言質-1930年代後半から真珠湾攻撃前夜の漫画雑誌を中心に」を連載したのもその一環。4月〜8月:戦前・戦中の漫画映画を分析。大阪プラネット映画資料館、近代フィルムセンター所蔵の『キネマ旬報』や『映画芸術』などの映画雑誌を調査。それまでの調査分析結果をもとに、英文単著の各章を執筆・推敲し、加えて序章と結論を執筆。
