We studied an interaction among general anesthetics and endogenous sleep-related substance. It is suggested that post anesthesia sleep was affected by ketamine, a general anesthetics. We found that non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) was reduced but REMS was increased after a few days later of ketamine anesthesia On the other hand, orexin, a wake-promote substance thus sleep-related substance, decreased anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness duration by several intravenous general anesthetics ; pentobarbital, thiopental and phenobarbital. Our results suggest that there would be some interaction among general anesthetics and endogenous sleep-related substance.
