The purpose of this study is to build an environmental information database system for education through the use of remote sensing image data and geographical information. Satellite remote sensing data are useful for environmental education. The data include atmospheric scattering effects, which must be removed before the data are used in educational materials.This study's conclusions can be summarized as follows :1) We adopted NOAA/AVHRR data as the educational resources and analyzed AVHRR reflectance data in the visible wavelength channel. In this study, the atmospheric correction scheme for AVHRR data over land was carried out using the correlation between the visible reflectance and middle infrared reflectance.2) We estimated the aerosol optical thickness using AVHRR data. We assumed an atmospheric-ground surface model for the atmospheric correction. The aerosol optical thickness is the most important parameter in that model. In this study, we retrieved the aerosol optical thickness over land surfaces using AVHRR surface reflectance data. We found that variations in the surface reflectance affect the sensitive estimation of the aerosol optical thickness.3) We developed a satellite image reference system for students to use in their outdoor activities. This system uses a blinking cursor to display positional information from the GPS. Students can identify their own position on the geometrical corrected image by consulting the GPS.
