近年の環境科学の発達により、分類学の存在価値は高まり、生物多様性の解明に邁進する分類学専門家組織が充実し始めた。しかし、学会レベルで分類学が生物群別に細分化されているため、研究・教育・普及活動の効率が悪く、また社会のニーズに対して足並みがそろわない。この現状を一気に解決するため、「生物多様性学会」の設立と、分類学界におけるNATURE、SCIENCEに匹敵する国際誌の発刊を目的として本研究を開始した。まず、平成13年6月、植物、動物あわせて17の分類学関連学会の代表が一同に会し、植物では植物分類学関連学会連絡会、動物では動物分類学関連学会連合を発展的に解消し、「日本分類学会連合」を結成できるかどうかの討議を行った。その結果、1)分類学の存在を社会、学界、文部科学省にインパクトを持って知らしめ、2)分類学の将来を話し合う場となり、3)社会に対する窓口となる、等々の点において「分類学会連合」は、有用であるとの合意が得られた。そこで、日本分類学会連合設立準備委員会を設置し、議論の場として、メーリングリスト(room50)を立ち上げた。その後、平成13年10月に設立準備委員会を開き、合計16学会の参加を得て、「日本分類学会連合」の設立が決定した。そして、平成14年1月12(土)に総会、文科省と環境省および各学会の関係者による記念講演、荒俣宏氏の特別講演を行ない、1月13(日)には参加学会自己紹介と記念シンポジュウム「これからの分類学」、総合討論を行ない、「日本分類学会連合」は無事船出した。以上のように、名称こそ当初計画した「生物多様性学会」ではなく「分類学会連合」と変わったが、本研究目的の大部分は達成したと考える。ただし、「分類学界におけるNATURE、SCIENCEに匹敵する国際誌の発刊」は残念ながら次の目標として残された。
