この研究計画で当初計画したことは、2000年1月に創設された「動物分類学関連学会連合(以下「分類連合」)」参加学会の(1)年次大会の共同同時開催、(2)ニュースレターの共同発行、そして分類学振興目的の(3)シンポジウムの開催の作成、そして、そのような業務を実行し、対外的には分類学振興活動を行うための組織(4)「分類センター」の設立であった。まず、年次大会の共同開催は残念ながら実現しなかった。分類連合のニュースレターは、4月25日に発行にこぎつけ、希望者にE-mailで約500、郵便で約300配布した。11月24日(金)には、北大の総長裁量経費の補助をも受けた「分類学研究センターを創る」と題するシンポジウムを開催した。合計8名の講演者は、分類学の重要性、とくに今この時代に分類学が必要とされており「分類センター」の設立は学界および一般社会から待ち望まれている、との点で意見が一致した。2001年1月13、14日には、国立科学博物館、国立環境研究所・地球環境研究センター、分類連合他3組織の共催により、Joint Forum: Taxonomy Initiatives for Biodiversity Conservation in an IT Era(IT時代における生物多様性保全と分類学イニシアティブ)を国立科学博物館分館で開催した。分類学関係者以外の参加も多く、分類学に対する一般社会の期待の大きさを感じた。なお、分類連合は国際動物命名規約第4版の日本語版を出版し、2001年2月末までに初版1500部をほぼ売り切った。これは当初の研究計画以外の大きな事業であった。今後は「分類センター」の実現と分類連合への植物分類学関連学会の加盟が望まれる。
