1.日本の死別研究において、男性の悲嘆について研究されているものは少ない。そこで、現代日本社会に生きる中高年(中年期)男性像について、社会学・社会心理学、精神医学の視点から検討した。男性性の縛りと歴史、他者が承認する男性性についての検討から、男性という性役割に附帯する価値や評価が男性個人の尊厳に大きな影響を与えていること、男性性は他者の承認に依存していること、男性主導社会において中年期男性は、支配する性として捉えられ、優越、権力、所有という志向性をもつことが明らかとなった。また中年期は、人生の後半に至る転換点として人間の生涯に重要な発達段階とみなされる。アイデンティティの再獲得というテーマをもち、危機を契機とした自己吟味とアイデンティティの問い直しが繰り返される。家庭においても、職場においてもこれまでの生き方を内省し、人間観や価値観の変更を要請される。このように中年期男性は、男性性を保ちながら、人生の中間点でのライフレビューとこれからの生き方の指針を得るという大きな課題をもっていることが伺える。2.死別体験の研究は、死別後の身体面、心理面、社会面の研究が多い。しかし、訪問看護師たちが行ったグリーフケアの意味は、患者の死が、遺族の生活や人生の流れの中に自然と組み込まれ、遺族が死を認める流れを作ること、遺族の後悔が疑問や推測である間に関わり、罪悪感を作らないこと、遺族のこれまでの介護生活の終結とその後の生活を支えることであった。訪問看護師たちの視点は、死別後の遺族の身体面、心理面、社会面だけでなく、「死を納得する」という実存面を中心に注がれていた。これは、V.Franklのいう納得・理解及び選択・決断という精神論的次元のことである。また、訪問看護師たちは、遺族の抱く後悔が遺族自身の力で納得へと変わってゆくプロセスに関わっていた。遺族はケアの受け手という視点を超えて、遺族自身が精神論的次元のニードに自分で答えを見出してゆくことができる。こうした知見は、遺族ケアを探るために死別体験を理解する視点となりうる。3.家で看取られたある中年期男性を訪問看護ステーションの集まりに呼ぶ。この男性のグリーフケアは、担当訪問看護師だけで行うのではなく、ステーションの人々皆で支援する。訪問看護師が会の中で自然な形で男性の話を聞く。男性は日々の生活、看取りのこと等を語る。死別後も男性がいつでも訪問看護師とコンタクトが取れる。死別体験は、苦悩をもたらす。しかし、生きる力を得る体験でもある。
