14年度の研究結果から、英語による講義において英語非母語話者の学生は、教師や他の学生とのコミュニケーションに困難を感じていることがわかった。教師、学生の双方にとって外国語である英語を媒介語とした講義では、教師の説明不足や学生の理解不足が起こりやすいため、活発な質疑応答や学生間の話し合いが不可欠である。そこで、15年度の研究では、学生間のグループディスカッションを録画、分析し、コミュニケーションの促進要因を明らかにした。これらの要因がわかれば、コミュニケーション活性化のための教育方法の開発が可能となり、学生の講義内容理解の促進に貢献できると考えた。分析の結果、たとえ英語を媒介語としても、異なる母語を背景にした学生間のコミュニケーションでは、それぞれの母語や留学生が学習している日本語の使用が、コミュニケーションの促進につながっていることがわかった。以下に観察された使用例を挙げる。(1)日本語の使用留学生は、英語のコミュニケーションの中で、日本語に翻訳できる表現があると、積極的に日本語で言い直していた。留学生が日本語を使用することで、日本人学生は留学生に親近感を持ち、留学生の間では学習者としての連帯感が生まれ、学生間の結束が強化されるという効果が見られた。(2)母語の使用英語の表現がわからない場合、他の母語話者に助けを求め、英語の表現を見つけることで、コミュニケーションを持続していた。また、話し合いの内容が複雑になった際も、母語話者間で内容確認し、考えをまとめた後で、英語で他の学生に伝えることで、話し合いの内容を深めることが可能になることがわかった。このように、様々な言語を背景にした学生間のコミュニケーションでは、学生間の協力のもとで言語バラエティーを活用すれば、コミュニケーションを促進することができる。教師は、講義を進める上で、こうした多言語使用の意義を認識する必要がある。
