前年度の研究目的である、縄文時代後期以降に見られる東日本由来の文化情報の波状的伝播・受容と在来文化伝統の変容という、当該時期における西日本文化動態の重要な特質の具体的把握に加え、今年度は、この文化動態と社会動態の相互関連及び変化過程を明らかにすることを目的として、後期中葉から後・晩期までの文化構造の動態及び、社会変動について検討を行った。その結果、文化構造の動態では、後期中葉中頃を境に、それまで若干閉鎖的であった外来文化の受容が再度活発となり、在来系土器群が、外来土器文化の伝播・受容を介して、次第にレベルダウンしてゆく過程及び、それと併行して新来外来系土器群が土器様式構造のより精製度の高い位置を占めてゆく過程を明らかにした。このような土器文化の変容に若干遅れて、土器埋設儀礼、抜歯儀礼、土偶に関わる儀礼など、より観念的色彩の濃い文化要素の受容が顕著となる点を明らかにした。これらの諸点から、従来後期前半を中心としてモデル化されていた、文化構造のレベルによる伝播・受容速度の相違を追証する形で、後期中葉以降においても、より精神的・観念的側面と関連する文化要素は、土器文化や生業に直結する諸要素より時間的に遅れて受容される点をモデル化した。社会動態の検討では、遺跡立地及び集落遺跡空間構造の分析を行った。その結果、集落立地は従来指摘されていたように後期中葉末から後期後葉にかけ中九州を中心に台地上へと変遷し、遺跡数も急増する点を確認した。また、集落内空間構造の分析により、後期後葉以降次第に環状集落構造が散見され、また住居址が2群あるいは3群程度の纏まりをもって集落を構成するという構成原理を把握した。以上の儀礼関連文化要素の動態と、集落動態の変化から、土器を中心とする文化情報の伝播が再度活発化する後期中葉においては社会成員の分節化の進展はさほど顕著ではなく、外来文化の在来文化への内在化、文化変容が進む後・晩期において、中九州地域を中心として社会の分節化が進展し、社会の複雑性が前段階までより高まっているという点を明らかにした。今後はこのような文化構造の動態と社会動態との相互関係について、生業における変化なども考慮しつつ、より長期的変化過程のモデルを構築する必要があるものと考える。これらの成果の一部は、昨年秋ロシアで開催されたヨーロッパ考古学者会議において口頭発表を行った。また、社会動態論及び文化動態論双方についての論文を現在準備中である。
