本年度は、当研究の最終年度であり、これまでに収集した一次史料から抜け落ちている箇所の確認、調査収集をおこない、その史料の分析を基に研究全体の枠組み再確認しながら、論文の執筆作業に専念した。具体的には1.平成16年9月29日〜10月4日まで、ロンドンのブリティッシュ・ライブラリを訪問し、ヴィクトリア朝における結婚と相続に関する教会関係の一次史料を収集した。2.その際にサセックス大学教授Lindsay Smithと面談し、主に論文の結部について意見交換をおこなった。3.論文の3章にあたるトロロープについての章で、Mr.Scarborough's Family, Sir Harry Hotspur of Humblethwaite, Miss Mackenzieの3作に見られる従兄妹間の結婚の可能性と、相続、セクシュアリティの関係性を分析し、さらにThe Eustace Diamondsでは、亡夫の弟との結婚という法的に禁じられた結婚の可能性をつぶすために、身内と他者の境界線に位置する従兄妹間の関係が不可欠であったことを証明した。4.論文の最終章ではバーディのTess of the d'UrbervillesとJude the Obscureを取り上げ、前者については従兄妹間の結婚と亡妻の妹との結婚が、このテクストにおいて有機的に関連していること、そして後者においては従兄妹間の結婚の問題とからんで、結婚という制度に潜むセクシュアリティの意味作用の場に、いかにヒロインがとりこまれているかを分析した。5.結婚(セクシュアリティ)と相続を軸に成立するヴィクトリア朝小説にとって、身内と他人のあわいに立つ従兄弟/従姉妹の存在がいかに重要であったかを、結婚法の改正についての歴史的背景とからめながら、論文全体の枠組みとして、「イントロダクション」の形で総括的に論じた。
