Wang Lipngは、ハーバード大学出版局より刊行することになっているParadise for Sale : Urban Space and Tourism in the Transformation of Hangzhou, 1689-1937の完成にむけて、駐防八旗について清代に編纂された志書をはじめ,八旗の知識人および彼らと具体的な交際をもった漢人の残した詩文,碑伝,新聞記事などを、京都大学人文科学研究所図書室、京都大学附属図書館、同文学部図書室などで収集するとともに、2004年2月には東京に出張し、東洋文庫、東京大学附属図書館などでも資料収集をおこなった。岩井は、1644以前のホンタイジ時代について、漢人および朝鮮人の帰順,収容(拉致などを含む)の過程およびかれらが遼東社会の変容や清朝の帝国化のなかで果たした政治的・軍事的役割などについての資料を収集し,分析を加えるため、档案資料などを対象として資料収集をおこなった。岩井が主催する共同研究班「近世中国法制史料の研究」の研究会にWang Lipngが出席し、討議に参加した。岩井は、2003年11月14日,15日ソウルで開催された韓国明清史学会創立二十周年紀年国際学術大会「21世紀明清史研究方向的新探索」に招待講演者として招かれ、「清朝・朝鮮・対馬--1639年前後東北亜細亜形勢--」と題する講演をおこない、複層的な民族構成をもつ清朝国家における内部の政治・文化関係および周辺のモンゴル、朝鮮、さらには日本との関係について、韓国、中国、日本からの参加者と討議した。2004年3月には、駐防八旗についての専門的著作を発表した中国社会科学院歴史研究所の研究員定宜庄女史が来日し、大阪市立大学が主催したシンポジウム「東アジア近世都市における社会的結合」の席上、講演をおこなった。このシンポジウムにさいし、岩井は司会をつとめると同時に、八旗についての資料および研究状況について定宜庄女史と情報交換をおこなった。
