日本国内では、日本浮世絵博物館(松本)・松浦史料博物館・神奈川県立博物館(長谷部コレクション)、京都・東京個人、米国ではボストン美術館・ハーバード大学サックラー美術館、狂歌本および一枚刷り(摺物)等の調査を行い、それぞれに、従来その存在を知られていなかった作品を見出し得た。とくにサックラー美術館では、大田南畝の寛政期における狂歌壇との関わり、またその姿勢を典型的に示すと思われる摺物を披見し得て、前年度の調査で得られた摺物(フランス国立図書館蔵)の知見と併せて、該期の大田南畝の文学活動に関して、狂歌壇から遠ざかっていたとされてきた従来の把握から一歩進め、対外的には狂歌と距離をおく姿勢を強調しつつも私的には狂歌を詠じ続けたという推論を行った(「寛政期の大田南畝と狂歌」)。今年度までの調査で得られた天明・寛政・享和期の狂歌本・摺物についてのデータを踏まえ、該期のそれらの出版動向についての見通しを示し得た。すなわち、寛政期には狂歌本・摺物ともに色刷り挿絵の流行を見、狂歌本では何らかの理由で文化初年からそうした傾向に変化が見られ、色刷り挿絵本が出版されなくなるが、それに代わって摺物の出版は年を追って盛んになり、大型の摺り物から、揃い物という本に準じる規模の出版形式が工夫され、以後の狂歌壇の主要な出版形式の一つとなることを論じた('Publishing Activities of Poetry groups in Edo : Early Illustrated Kyoka Anthologies and Surimono Series')。また、該期の狂歌本のうち、とくに従来その存在を知られていない作品については、国際浮世絵学会第51回研究会で「絵入り狂歌本の挿絵」と題して報告する(2004年3月27日、於学習院大学)。これら、寛政期以後の狂歌本における狂歌作品と亭号・堂号などによる狂名表記のあり方は、天明期の狂歌師の狂名とは明らかに異なる自己顕示的意味を持つことを確認した(「天明狂歌の狂名について」)これら以外にも、神奈川県立博物館で確認された天明七年の南畝率いる四方連の狂歌摺物などいくつかの貴重な資料については近々の発表を予定している。
