项目摘要

本年度は調査対象を15世紀末から16世紀初頭にかけて生産されたチョーサー作品を含む写本や印刷本全般へと視野を広げ、この時期におけるチョーサー作品とその周辺の作品受容の問題について書物史的視点から考察を加えた。『カンタベリー物語』という作品は、複数の巡礼者が集い、さまざまなジャンルの物語を語る枠構造を持つ。特に15世紀末からは騎士道ロマンス、宗教・教訓的なテーマなど、特定のジャンルを扱った物語のみを取り出し、同類の他の作品と合わせて別のコンテクストの中に置きかえた写本アンソロジーも作り出されている。一方、手書き写本と異なり、大量生産が可能な印刷本は、同じ版であればどれも均質であり、写本のような独自性はないと考えられてきた。しかし本研究では、写本アンソロジーの特質が印刷本の時代においてもSammelband(合冊本)に見出される点に注目し、チョーサー作品を含んだSammelband、また類似したテーマを集めたSammelbandについてロンドンにある大英図書館所蔵の15世紀〜16世紀に出版された英国初期刊本を中心に調査を進め、写本アンソロジーと印刷本Sammelbandの類似点、相違点について考察を重ねた。最近はじまったばかりのSammelband研究が対象とするのはおもに15世紀刊本であり、16世紀初期Sammelband研究はまだあまり進んでいない。そこで本研究では16世紀に版を重ねて印刷されたFitzherbertによるThe book of husbandryに注目した。そして現存するコピーを調査した結果、印刷本文化と同時代に活躍していたこの作品の著者は、印刷業者と同様、Sammelbandという形態に意識的であった可能性を指摘した。本研究成果については2005年12月に行われた中世英語英文学会で、申請者が司会・構成を務めたシンポジウムにて口頭発表した。
