前年度の研究成果に基づき、書誌学的見地からドゥ・ウォード版『カンタベリー物語』におけるテクスト編集について検討してきた。前年度の研究では、おもにキャクストン第2版との徹底的な比較を行ったが、本年度は現存する写本のテクストとの比較を進め、ドゥ・ウォードが2種類の底本(キャクストン第2版と写本)を使い分けている箇所を確認した。この成果は口頭発表や論文などで発表してきたが、その過程において、ドゥ・ウォード版のテクストを、より緻密なレベルで、可能な限り数多くの現存する写本と比較校合する必要性を感じるようになった。こうしたテクスト校合に関しては、近年「カンタベリー物語プロジェクト」が特殊な校合ソフトを開発し、写本やキャクストン版についてその成果を発表している。申請者は本年度の研究活動を通じて、同プロジェクトの主事の賛同を得ることに成功し、このソフトを活用してドゥ・ウォード版のテクスト研究を発展させる運びとなった。ドゥ・ウォードが部分的に写本を使ったのは、その底本であるキャクストン第2版に欠損したページがあった時のみであるとして、その編集方針の恣意性が批判されていた。しかしながら、コンピューターを駆使して、写本とその他の初期印刷本とのテクスト校合・分析を極めて詳細に行うことで、ドゥ・ウォードはテクストのordinatioとcompilatioを写本の伝統から取り入れるために、写本を部分的に使ったのではないかという、申請者の仮説を検証しつつある。また、ドゥ・ウォードが使用した写本の系統については、これまでさまざまな憶測がなされてきた。現時点では決定的な回答は得られていないが、本年度の研究活動で得たデータを今後分析することで、この大きな問題についてもあらたな視点から再考することが可能となった。今後さらに考察を深め、その成果を今年の夏(2003年)の国際学会で発表する予定である。

The research results of the previous year were based on the views of calligraphy and history. A thorough comparison of the previous year's study with the 2nd edition of the journal was conducted. The second edition of the book is entitled to review and comment on the arbitrariness of the compilation policy.
