十六世紀後半にスペイン南部に出現したアルンブラード(照明派)を率いていたのが、フアン・デ・アビラの弟子だったことは、一般的には全く知られていない事実である。彼らはマエストロと呼ばれる霊的指導者に絶対的服従を誓い、完徳に到るためには性的オルギーに耽ることさえも辞さなかったという。この弟子集団の実体と、それがアルンブラードと結びついた理由を明らかにすることが本年度の研究の目的である。アビラは、説教の先々で弟子を作った。アビラはこの弟子集団をもとに修道会を創設しようと考えていたが、同じ理念をイエズス会がすでに実現していることを知ったために、計画を放棄した。弟子とともに自らもイエズス会に入会しようとさえした。しかしアビラの病気の悪化したことに加え、アビラと弟子の多くがコンベルソ(改宗者)であったことが入会の障害になった。他方でこの磁気には、ハエン司教区において、聖堂参事会が血の純潔規程を導入するなど、コンベルソが高位聖職から排除されるようになっていた。アビラの弟子たちは、その多くがコンベルソであったために旧キリスト教徒によって異端審問所に告発され、次々に逮捕されていった。弟子たちがアビラに絶対的服従を誓うようになったのは、法的なまとまりをもたなかった彼らが、そのことによって結束を保つためであったろうと思われる。その頃の弟子集団の中核は、アビラが創設したバエサ大学にあった。アビラは遺言で、彼が死んだ後はバエサ大学の学頭であるカルレバルに服従を誓うよう弟子たちに指示した。カルレバルの死後は、アビラの弟子の筆頭格をバエサ大学の学頭が引き継ぎ、アルンブラードは彼らに服従を誓った。つまるアルンブラードの特徴をなすマエストロへの絶対的服従は、アビラの弟子集団を統括していた組織原理を引き継いだものであると考えられるのである。
