Under our former pregnant women home monitoring system (Home telemetry), the heart rate information used to be transmitted through the Internet connected to a commercial provider (Nifty) through ordinary telephone lines. At present, under a mobile system (the DoPa technology similar to iMode) using packet telecommunication, it is possible for both pregnant women and doctors to monitor the fetal state anywhere outside hospitals and clinic. This mobile transmission system consists of small and light mobile fetal rate detection equipment and receiving equipment. A receiver can choose either a conventional fetal rate monitoring system installed within medical institutions or a mobile computer terminal. The fetal heart rate information detected at home is transmitted in packets to NTT Docomo's DoPa network. The received data are accumulated in the server for the fetal heart rate, and doctors can receive the data on the Internet at any time. One of the most popular cases is to send one compressed form of data for a period of 20 minutes a couple of times a day. If necessary, however, it is also possible to transmit data almost in real time by continuously sending them at one or two-minute intervals. One of the greatest features of this transmission system is that packet telecommunication has realized an environment similar to permanent connection, and it is far more economical compared to the traditional permanent connection. This system has enabled pregnant women and doctors to observe the fetal status wherever they go. Also, on the receiver's side, doctors and workers at different clinical institutions can share information, and the cooperation among hospitals and clinics is possible, which will be of a great clinical significance. It is expected that monitoring systems using such mobile equipment will become widespread in the future for high-risk pregnancy such as threatened premature birth and toxemia.
