本年度は,近代の郊外住宅地形成における造園産業の具体的な役割を,解明するにあたって,その前段階として,近代の庭をめぐる言説について研究を行った。これまで,郊外住宅地については,住宅建築そのものについて論じた研究や,郊外住宅地の開発に論点をおいた研究は,多くの実績があるが,住宅庭園についてはほとんど取り上げられてこなかった。造園学においても,近代公園などの研究が専ら中心となっている。そのため,まず造園産業が郊外住宅地にかかわる背景となった庭園をめぐる意識を把握する必要があると考えた。大正期から昭和戦前期にかけて発行された雑誌,『住宅』『住宅と庭園』『造園雑誌』『建築雑誌』『健築と社会』『大大阪』などから,住宅と庭園との関係,あるいは庭園をめぐる言説を拾い上げ,それらを整理,分析した。大正期から昭和戦前期を対象としたのは,郊外住宅地が中流階級層に一挙に普及した時代であるとともに,それに関連して多くの住宅関係雑誌が発行された時期にあたるためである。分析した内容は,言説の時代ごとの特徴と変遷,住宅建築との関係についてである。まず,時代的特徴を社会背景とともに整理することで,1910年から45年までの時代が4期に分類できることを指摘し,それぞれ模索期,啓蒙活動期,実用庭園定着期,戦時体制期としてくくることができた。次に,言説の内容をカテゴリーにわけ,各内容を時代的特徴と合わせて詳しく分析した。さらに,住宅平面図に描かれた庭園図106枚から,その要素,構成,住宅平面との関係,時代的変遷を分析し,住空間としての庭園のあり様を辿った。本年度の研究で,当時の学者,供給者側の理念や提案,思想的流れを明らかにし,加えて住空間における庭園の位置づけを解明することができた。
