近代に郊外住宅地が拡大する過程において,造園業が重要な役割を果たしていたこと指摘するとともに,その実態を明らかにすることが本研究の目的である。17・18年度の宝塚市平井・山本地区,京都市右京区宇多野界隈,阪急宝塚線・京阪本線・近鉄大阪線沿線の造園業者に関する資料調査,現地調査,ヒヤリングをもとに,19年度は補足調査と収集資料の分析を行うことで,造園業者がデベロッパーと結びついて住宅地開発に少なからず関わっていたこと,また,郊外住宅において庭園がひとつの郊外文化を象徴する存在となっていたことが把握できた。そこでは,開発の活発化とともに造園業が隆盛する様(例えば電鉄会社が設立する造園部門),郊外住宅の住人と造園業者との密度の濃い交流(例えば出入りの庭師の存在)が見て取れた。つまり,造園業は郊外住宅においてハード面の供給のみならず,文化というソフト面をも担っていたことが明らかとなった。さらに,郊外住宅地の立地に関して,造園業者やその圃場が位置する地域に,住宅地が拡大する傾向が見て取れ,圃場跡が住宅地に変わっていく,あるいは圃場を取り囲むかたちで住宅地化が進むことで,近代住宅の文化と造園業が現実の風景としても重なっていく姿を捉えることができた。19年度はさらに,住宅地の立地と果樹園芸との関係にも注目し,岡山をフィールドに桃畑が住宅地へと転換していく過程と,その過程において桃畑が郊外住宅の良好なイメージとして利用されていたことを明らかにした。こうした果樹畑と住宅地の拡大の関係は岡山以外の各地でも確認できた。これらの成果により,近代の郊外住宅地は,植木畑や果樹園といったかつての郊外風景への憧憬を内包するものであり,その性格ゆえに近代造園業と強く結びつき,拡大し,成熟していったことが指摘できた。
