この研究は、現在、重大な岐路に立たされている日本社会の構造変化の方向性を、エリート集団の実態分析を通じて明らかにしたものである。いかなる社会であれ、その制度的な変化と構造的変化に決定的な影響を与えるのは政治エリートと経済エリートの危機意識であり、その社会的動向である。彼らの社会的利害関係を幅広い社会科学的な視野から批判的に解明していくことが研究テーマである。本研究は、現代日本における政治エリートと経済エリートの双方に目を向け、その実態解明を通じて、現代日本のこれからの方向性を占う新たな示唆を得たいと考え、同じような問題意識に立って、諸外国で積み重ねられているエリート研究との交流や比較のために基礎的なデータを諸外国に向けて発信していきたいと考えて行われた。その意味で、この研究は積極的な成果発信を第一の課題として、研究が行われてきており、2年間におこなわれた研究は十分にその目的を達成したと言える。とくにこの発信事業は、学会発表、学術機関誌への論文発表、大学院での連続講義などを通じて、積極的に行われた。また、現代日本における政治エリートと経済エリートの双方に目を向け、人的ネットワーク、家族構成、世代間の利害状況、学歴、文化的関心、政治意識など、その実態解明を行ってきた。高度に制度化された階層社会としての日本の現状と、そのなかで独自の生態を示す日本のエリート諸層の実態解明が目指され、そのために人事録その他の人物資料の収集を行い、データが整えられてきた。発表された成果はこれらを駆使して行われたものであり、日本だけでなく、ドイツでも高い評価を獲得しつつある。それらの成果を踏まえて、補足的な追加研究、補助調査が継続中である。今後も共同研究の機会を模索しつつ、そうした作業に集中するとともに、今後ありうる共同研究の新たな展開にむけて準備作業も行っていきたいと考えている。
