西部裕固語(以下彼等の自称「ヨグル語」を使用する)は、トルコ系民族がイスラム化する前に、甘粛省に東遷したので、他のトルコ系民族の受けたイスラム教やアラブ文化の影響がない。そのためもあって、その言語は古代トルコ語の特徴をよく残している。今回の共同研究によって、それが確かめられると同時に、古代日本語の文法現象について、新たな視点が得られた。例えば、ヨグル語では受身形は、時には可能、自発の意味を持つが、それは古代日本語の受身助動詞「る」「らる」と同じである。特に興味深いのは、ヨグル語では受身が可能の意味をもつ過程が跡づけられる点である。日本語の受身形は「自発」を基本として発達したという見解については改めて考える必要がある。ヨグル語の研究は、ほとんど進んでいない。今回、招聘できた鐘進文氏が唯一の研究者と言っても良いが、この共同研究によって鐘氏の文法分析が、中国語や、これまでの漢族の分析の影響を受けて、かなり矛盾のあるものとなっており、丁寧に日本語と対比することによって、分析すべき多くの言語現象があること、文法体系がかなりゆがんで捉えられていることが分かった。日本語と、細部まで比較するためには、あらためてヨグル語の文法書を作成しながら、共同研究を続けなければならない。また、文法書の作成以前に、ヨグル語の単語の正書法を決めなければならない。ヨグル語の表記はローマ字を使うことになるが、その正書法が決まっていないために、同じ単語が全く違った表記になったり、二つの語が融合した形式になっているものも少なくない。資料を残してゆくためにも、正確な文法分析のためにも、正書法を決めることは喫急の作業である。現在、ヨグル語の話手は3千人ほどしか居ず、年々、漢語の影響が強くなり、若者にはヨグル語を解さない者が多くなってきている。放っておけば、この一世代で滅亡してしまうことになるだろう。この共同研究は、ヨグル語が滅亡する寸前に、その言語を記録し、分析する貴重な機会となった。
