[予備調査]:2003年度〜2004年度末データ収集。カナダ主要複数都市での調査。データ:郵送型・半構造的アンケート調査(日本人スタッフ11名)とインタビュー(2名)など。分析:日本人学生の集団性・消極性とともに、学生たちの留学動機や現地での言動は個人的事情と社会変化に影響されている実態が明らかになった。アジア系学生へのステレオタイプ観に関する示唆提示。[本調査]:2004年度〜2005年度末データ収集と分析。カナダ主要一都市での調査。データ:半構造的アンケート調査(日本人学生216名)、インタビュー(日本人学生12名)、現地校責任者へのインタビュー(8名)、参与型観察とフィールドノート、現地での文献調査など。テーマ別分析項目:1.英語力上達度、英語使用度、ホームステイでの交流度という3点において大きな成果が見られない場合でも、語学留学体験に対する満足感は維持されているケースが明らかとなった。その背景考察。2.日本人学生と韓国人学生との交流は短期の場合は非常に友好的なものとなることが多いが、長期になると摩擦が生じる場合と、歴史的見解を率直に述べ合うほどの安定した友人関係に発展する場合などいくつかのパターンが観察された。Intergroup relations理論の観点からの考察。3.フルタイムの職を辞し、長期で語学留学している20代半ばから30代前半の日本人女性たちの留学動機には、日本社会における性役割観、年齢、学歴、企業文化といった社会的要素が大きく影響していることが示された。日本の英語教育政策と第二言語学習動機付け研究への示唆提示。4.アンケート調査から得た量的データを統計分析し、留学生の満足感・英語使用頻度・交友関係などに相関関係のある要素を特定し、関連する先行文献との比較とともに、結果を考察した。
