一昨年度と昨年度に続き、本年度も戦後日本のマスメディアにおけるオセアニア表象、とりわけメラネシア地域に関する異文化表象を主たる対象としながら、主に以下の研究活動を行った。1.1960年代から本研究に着手する前年(2002年)までに放映されたメラネシアを取り上げたテレビ番組における異文化表象のあり方の検討。2.同じ時期に出版されたメラネシアを取り上げた図書における異文化表象のあり方の検討。3.1.で検討の対象としたテレビ番組の制作過程に対する文化人類学者の関与のあり方の検討。その結果、主に以下の知見を得た。1.テレビ番組においては、各年代を通じて集落部を対象とした番組がきわめて多く、対照的に都市部のみを取り上げたものは皆無に等しい。また、番組のなかで取り上げられる人々はペニスケースや腰蓑といった出で立ちであることが多い。そして、これらの地域や人々に対して「秘境」、「未開」、「裸族」などの語が使われ、「近代的な世界から隔絶した世界に生きる人々」や「外部者を容易に寄せつけない未開人」といった提示の仕方がなされている。こうした傾向は1960年代から2002年まで大きく変化することなく続いている。2.図書においては、テレビ番組にみられたものと同じような傾向が、1960年代から70年代に出版されたものに関して認められる。しかしながら、そうした傾向は1980年代以降に出版されたものに関しては希薄になり、都市部を取り上げたもの、あるいはTシャツやズボン、ワンピースといった出で立ちの人々の写真を多く掲載したものも目立つようになっている。3.テレビ番組の制作過程に対する文化人類学者の関与は1960年代においては顕著であったが、海外での調査研究に関する基盤整備(科研費の充実化など)が進むとともに希薄化し、近年では番組制作者が番組の制作過程で文化人類学者の研究成果を一方的に「流用」する形になっている。上の1.で指摘したように、テレビ番組のなかでメラネシアとそこで暮らす人々は、1960年代からこの方、一貫して「未開」や「秘境」といったキーワードに収斂する形で表象されてきた。こうした表象が維持されてきた背景には、それがテレビ界の視聴率競争との関連で、視聴率を獲得するための重要な「資源」と目され、利用され続けてきたことがあると考えられる。なお、以上に述べた知見などについては、別に作成した報告書(『日本のマスメディアにおけるオセアニア表象の文化人類学的研究-平成15〜17年度科学研究費補助金研究成果報告書』)で詳述した。
