近代産業社会当初において「労働者」であった「大衆」がどのように20世紀大量消費社会の担い手となったのかという点から研究に取り組み、とりわけプロダクトデザイン、都市デザインに関する文献・資料を収集した平成16年度に対して、平成17年度は、公的な扶助を受けることが「怠惰」となり、雇用を社会統合の手段として近代産業社会が形成された経緯とその揺らぎのストーリーを巧みに描いた『大転換』の著者カール・ポランニーの産業社会思想を踏まえた産業社会再編の思想史的研究を行った。平成17年度のポランニー研究の特色は、第一に、研究の軸を経済人類学から『大転換』へとシフトさせ、ポランニー思想の全体像を明らかにしようとする新しいポランニー研究の国際的な動向を概観したことである。第二の特色は、「社会の現実」と「人間の自由」という彼の思想形成の原動力となった思考の対抗軸が、若き日のポランニーのウイーン時代(1919〜33)の草稿「ビヒモス」「自由論」から、イギリス時代(1933〜47)の「ファシズムの本質」を経て、成熟期から晩年に至るアメリカ時代(1947〜64)に至るポランニーの思想的核心を貫いていることを明らかにしたことである。またポランニー研究として次の点を明らかにしたことに本研究の意義があると考える。第一は、『大転換』の主題と構成を再検討し、人間を社会的存在として認識しない経済的自由主義思想のルーツがスピーナムランド時代(1795〜1834における古典的経済思想の形成=19世紀的意識の誕生にある、というポランニー命題の重要性を明らかにしたことである。第二に、「自己調整的市場はユートピアである」という『大転換』の命題に注目して以下の重要な論点を浮き彫りにした。すなわちポランニーによれば、『自己調節的市場」の概念が制度的な論理をもたない。これに対して、ポランニーの「商品擬制」論は「市場経済の制度的本質」を理解するための基礎概念である。このような制度経済学的な『大転換』理解は、経済学と倫理学の再統合という近年の公共哲学の潮流や、資本主義の制度的多様性をめぐる今日の制度派経済学の議論に通じているものである。第三に、『大転換』以降晩年にかけての「権力、テクノロジー、人間の自由」の緊張関係に着目するポランニーの思想を、弟子のロートシュタインが書き記した回想録「ウィークエンド・ノート」を検討することによって、浮き彫りにした。
