今年度の主要な目的は、世界の3地域内(アジア地域、ヨーロッパ地域、アメリカ地域)と3地域間の国際航空ネットワークの構造を概観した上で国際的都市システムを把握すると同時に、世界の主要都市のハブ(拠点)性の現状を解明することであった。その中では、都市の拠点性/中心性を反映する"都市ダミー変数"を導入したGDP、人口および距離から構成される重力モデルによる分析を行った。そして、新空港の開港が都市の拠点性/中心性に及ぼす影響を、パネルデータ分析によって明らかにした。ここでの分析結果から言えることは、ます第1に、1982年度から2000年度までの約20年間にわたる時系列分析の結果、アジア地域内においては、東京、香港、およびシンガポールが国際航空旅客・貨物流動のハブ(拠点)になっていることである。特に、香港とソウルの拠点性の上昇が顕著であった。ヨーロッパ地域では、ロンドン、パリ、フランクフルト、およびアムステルダムの、アメリカ地域では、ニューヨークとマイアミのハブ(拠点)性が顕著であった。そして第2に、新空港の開港によって、都市のハブ(拠点)性が上昇することが判明した。例えば、関西国際空港が開港した1994年度以降、国際貨物流動における大阪のハブ(拠点)性は上昇した。他方、1992年度に新空港が開港したミュンヘンでは、特に国際旅客流動におけるハブ(拠点)性が上昇した。このように、新空港が及ぼす影響は都市によって異なることが判明した。さらに第3に、近年の国際航空貨物の動向として、アジア地域における国際分業が進展した結果、国際航空貨物が顕著に増加していることが明らかになった。その中では、雁行形態的発展、日本企業の垂直的分業と逆輸入、中間財輸出の現状、ならびに国際物流企業の戦略と国際航空貨物輸送ネットワークが詳細に分析された。
